Housing Gender Configurations

Lehigh University offers different housing options to support our ongoing commitment to developing environments that are welcoming and inclusive. Lehigh University affirms the rights of all students to live on the floor in accordance with their gender identity.

Co-ed Housing

The majority of our traditional style Residence Halls are Co-ed in some configuration.

A Co-ed building is defined as a building which houses students who identify as men, women, or non-binary.

A Co-ed floor or wing has alternating gender rooms, suites, or apartments on the same floor, with single-gender bathrooms.

Co-ed housing is available for all undergraduate students who are eligible for University Housing.

All first-year residence halls are co-ed buildings, and the distribution of wings and floors varies in each building.

Co-ed housing is also available and suite/apartment style housing for Upperclass students.

Single-Gender Housing

Single-Gender housing is defined as a single-gender floor or wing within a building which is co-ed overall. An example of this would be where the A1 wing houses men and the B1 wing houses women, or where the 1st floor houses men and the 2nd floor houses women.

All-Gender Housing

All-gender housing also supports the University’s non-discrimination policy with respect to sexual orientation, sex, gender, and gender identity with the intent of creating a more comfortable living environment and on-campus home for our students. All-gender housing is an option for all undergraduate students who are eligible for University housing. This may include those who identify as transgender, non-binary, or are questioning their gender identity.

All gender housing is provided in traditional-style housing for first year students and suite/apartment style housing for Upperclass students. In traditional style housing, the bathrooms on the floor are also all-gender, and have the added privacy feature of floor-to-ceiling partitions between toilets and showers.

If a vacancy occurs during the year, the current resident is encouraged to find a new roommate to fill the vacancy. The University does reserve the right to assign the room as a single-gender space in a situation where housing is needed for people on the waiting list and no other single-gender space is available.
