Many houses have fireplaces for the chapters to use. If it is a gas fireplace (with permanent logs in place), the pilot must be ignited every year by Facilities Services. Place a work order online for this. If the fireplace is wood burning, be sure the flue is open. The chapter is responsible to supply wood. Screens must be in front of all fireplaces at all times.
Gas
- Use only as instructed.
- Do not move or rearrange logs.
- A screen must be kept in place at all times.
- Notify Residential Services if the house needs training on using the fireplace.
The misuse of any fireplace will be considered a major life safety violation and the fireplace will be closed for a minimum of 1 year. Misuse includes but is not limited to:
- Burning anything besides wood or duraflame.
- Overloading
- Not using a screen
