General Policies & Licensing Requirements

This page provides guidance on the proper use of Lehigh University names, marks, logos, and brand assets. Policies apply to all individuals and organizations affiliated with the University. Use the sections below to find guidance relevant to your role.

Protected Marks

These protected marks help preserve and strengthen the Lehigh brand. All use of university names, logos, symbols, and related verbiage must comply with trademark and licensing policies.

Brand Rule Basics

  • All vendors producing merchandise using Lehigh University names, trademarks, logos, or other protected marks, whether for resale, giveaways, student organizations, departments, events, or internal University use must be licensed.
  • Athletic logos are typically reserved for athletics
  • No official Lehigh logo can be merged with a secondary logo or design. Instead, it can be typed out in a sans serif font, either Dopis or Inter (or Google substitutes Sora or Barlow)
  • Correct and current PMS color codes should always be used
  • Altering the Lehigh logo in any way is not permitted
  • Club sports and intramurals are permitted to use 38-43 on the art sheet
  • Use of L-hawk logo as a standalone is reserved for athletic teams only

Licensing Policies

  • The names and marks of the University will not be used in the promotion of alcohol, tobacco or “recreational" drug products.
  • The names and marks of Lehigh University are to be used on products which are tasteful and of such a nature as to reflect positively on the image of the University.
  • Merchandise that bears a registered (or common law) trademark, trade name, service mark, or logo of Lehigh University must be approved, in writing, by Learfield Licensing Partners prior to production.
  • Any vendor creating products for Lehigh University and/or using Lehigh University names, logos and trademarks must be licensed. Merchandise produced without written authorization may be considered "counterfeit" and subject to all available legal remedies, including seizure of the merchandise.
  • Logos are to be used as registered, including the appropriate trademark designation, but may not be otherwise altered without the expressed authorization of Lehigh University and Learfield Licensing Partners. One exception to this policy is uniforms that are used by the Lehigh University athletic teams. This would apply only to the “on-field” product and not to any replica or authentic items that are to be resold to the general public.
  • The names, trademarks and logos of Lehigh University are to be used on products that comply with brand standards, are approved through the licensing process and are consistent with Lehigh's mission, values and reputation.
  • Recognized student groups may use certain logos for official business.
  • University logos cannot be used to endorse or promote a private group or business unless authorized by a formal contract or sponsorship agreement. Private companies are allowed to use University logos only after entering into a promotion specific agreement with the University.
  • No coach or athletic staff member has the authority to complete an authorization form allowing an unlicensed vendor to utilize licensed marks. Nor do they have University permission to directly send logos to unlicensed vendors. Any vendor wishing to use a Lehigh mark should be directed to Learfield Licensing Partners for guidance on acceptable procedures.
  • Logos may not be created for University academic and administrative departments. Logos for these types of departments will be created and provided by University Communications and Public Affairs. If you do not have your department’s official logo, please reach out to communications@lehigh.edu
  • Logos for clubs and organizations can be created following the Tier Two Promotional Logos guidelines in the brand hub.
